FIFA World Cup 2026: DR Congo Hold Portugal to Historic Draw in Group K Clash

African Underdogs Earn First-Ever World Cup Point

DR Congo made national football history by battling to a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their opening Group K match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The result marked the country’s first point at a World Cup and added another memorable chapter to the tournament’s early stages.

Facing a Portuguese side packed with international stars, DR Congo showed composure and determination throughout the encounter, standing firm against sustained pressure to secure a valuable result.

Fast Start Gives Portugal Early Advantage

Portugal wasted little time asserting itself and moved ahead within the opening five minutes. A dangerous delivery from Pedro Neto found Joao Neves in space inside the penalty area, and the midfielder directed a header into the net to make it 1-0.

The early breakthrough allowed Portugal to dictate possession for long periods. Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo combined to create attacking opportunities, while DR Congo focused on maintaining a compact defensive shape.

Although Portugal controlled the tempo, the African side remained disciplined and gradually settled into the match. Their organized backline limited clear openings and prevented the Europeans from fully capitalizing on their dominance.

Wissa Delivers a Moment for the History Books

As halftime approached, DR Congo found the breakthrough they had been searching for. Yoane Wissa seized on an opportunity in the Portuguese penalty area and calmly finished to level the score.

The strike carried enormous significance, becoming DR Congo’s first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup. It was a reward for a side that had absorbed pressure and remained patient despite spending much of the first half without possession.

The equalizer shifted momentum and ensured both teams headed into the break with everything still to play for.

VAR Denies Portugal After Restart

Portugal emerged from the dressing room determined to restore their lead. Shortly after the restart, Joao Cancelo thought he had put his side back in front, only for VAR to intervene and rule the goal out for offside.

The decision kept DR Congo alive and encouraged them to continue pushing forward when opportunities arose. Cedric Bakambu nearly produced a stunning turnaround, striking the post during one of the visitors’ most dangerous attacks of the evening.

At the opposite end, Diogo Costa was called into action several times to prevent DR Congo from taking a surprise lead.

Portugal Unable to Find a Winner

With time running out, Portugal increased the pressure. Head coach Roberto Martinez introduced Francisco Conceicao, Rafa Leao, Nelson Semedo and Goncalo Ramos in an attempt to break down the resilient Congolese defence.

Despite controlling possession and creating chances, Portugal lacked precision in the final third. Ronaldo, who was closely monitored throughout the match, was unable to make the decisive impact expected of him. The veteran forward missed a couple of opportunities during the closing stages as frustration grew among Portuguese supporters.

Meanwhile, DR Congo managed the game intelligently, disrupting Portugal’s rhythm and defending with determination whenever danger approached.

Memorable Night for DR Congo

The final whistle sparked celebrations among the Congolese players and fans. After registering their first World Cup goal through Wissa, they also collected their first point in the competition’s history.

For Portugal, the draw represents dropped points in a competitive Group K that also features Colombia and Uzbekistan. For DR Congo, however, the result stands as a landmark achievement and a statement that they are capable of competing with some of the world’s strongest teams on football’s biggest stage.
