Morocco’s rising star Ayyoub Bouaddi has been named in Opta’s Team of the World Cup 2026 opening round after an impressive performance against Brazil. The Lille midfielder secured his place among the tournament’s standout players following Morocco’s 1-1 draw with the South American giants on June 13.
At just 18 years old, Bouaddi was making his World Cup debut, yet he displayed remarkable composure and confidence throughout the match. Facing one of the strongest teams in international football, he demonstrated the qualities of a seasoned professional and played a key role in Morocco’s midfield.
Bouaddi’s influence was evident in the numbers. He recorded 87 touches during the match, a total surpassed only by Brazil’s two central defenders. His involvement highlighted Morocco’s ability to maintain possession and build attacks through the midfield despite Brazil’s pressure.
The young midfielder also completed 60 of his 66 passes, achieving a 90.7 percent passing accuracy. His ability to receive the ball in tight spaces, distribute it efficiently, and maintain control helped Morocco compete on equal terms with one of the tournament favorites.
According to Opta, Bouaddi became the second-youngest player since 1966 to complete at least 50 passes in a World Cup match. He reached this milestone at 18 years and 254 days, further underscoring the significance of his achievement.
In addition to his passing performance, Bouaddi showed confidence when carrying the ball forward. He attempted five dribbles during the match, ranking second among Moroccan players. Only Azzedine Ounahi attempted more, with eight dribbles.

Opta’s Team of the Opening Round features several of football’s most recognizable stars. Bouaddi was selected in midfield alongside United States international Weston McKennie.

In defence, Antonee Robinson, Harry Souttar, Roberto Lopes, and Michael Murillo completed the back line, with Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha selected between the posts.
Bouaddi’s outstanding World Cup debut has increased attention from some of Europe’s leading clubs. Reports have linked the Lille midfielder with teams such as Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.
His performance has also drawn praise from respected figures within the game. Lille striker Olivier Giroud recently described Bouaddi as mature and confident, highlighting the midfielder’s potential.
For Morocco, Bouaddi’s inclusion in Opta’s best XI reflects the national team’s strong start to the tournament.
